I Remember You Was Conflicted

Enjoy my 2-minute cut of the process of me making my most recent Kendrick Lamar portrait entitled, "I Remember You Was Conflicted".

The title comes from the poem Kendrick reads repeatedly through the album "To Pimp A Butterfly". I was inspired by the symbolism and detail Kendrick had in his songs, brought to my attention by the beautifully crafted podcast, Dissect(S1). I wanted this painting to also hold that strong symbolism, focusing on Kendrick's inner duality fighting between his life in Compton, and his new life in Hollywood.

The symbolism and references in "To Pimp A Butterfly" are so dense that this project was overwhelming to plan for. I went into it knowing I wouldn't be able to show as much symbolism as I would have liked. I relied heavily on resources out in the world; magazines, coupon books, newsprint; I really do like that 'luck of the draw' feeling when using collected magazine clippings.

This painting was a really fun process! I don't usually post time-lapse videos before the final one but I enjoyed posting my process to Instagram and hearing all your feedback. Even when the face didn't look exactly like Kendrick, you all stuck in there with supportive comments.

So, who should my next subject be?

Garbage Eater

Here's a fun drawing I finished recently. Created for a psychedelic jam band from Texas, I had a lot of fun thinking of pieces of garbage to add to the pile for their upcoming EP "Garbage Eater".

Stay tuned for a link to the EP when it's done!

Blind Blind at Tony V's

Blind Blind Tiger is hosting show after show from LA to WA. I'm really glad I went with this design for the show. I had this sketched out on paper and it had been sitting around unused. I made some small revisions and then inked it up, I couldn't be happier with it.

This show will be blasting eardrums in 4 days! See you there.

Blind Blind Tiger 2 Year Anniversary Party

One week from today, Blind Blind Tiger will be celebrating their 2 year anniversary!

They will also be celebrating, what would have been, Ryan Anderson's 31st birthday who passed away a little over a year ago. Proceeds to this event will go to The Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence. One thing I like about the Brady Campaign is their approach in educating the masses about gun safety as opposed to trying to rid the world of guns completely.

The location of the party is a pretty awesome place called Warehouse Acropolis in LA. It looks like a Pinterest board for "hip apartment" threw up into a big warehouse and added a shot of bourbon.

Lots of freebies and great music!!

Paloma Faith

I enjoy fun little challenges. If you are a close friend, you know that if you blurt out a visual idea and I like it enough, you'll be looking at it drawn up the next day.

When I saw the album cover for Paloma Faiths A Perfect Contradiction, with the prompt of creating poster art based on it, an idea sparked.

I like the idea of multiple pages depicting different aspects of a person. I used Paloma's face and dressed her in her different outfits like her album cover. I also added mock pages and paper texture to really bring it to life.

If you enjoy how it looks and think it deserves to be turned into a real life poster, please vote for it here: https://www.talenthouse.com/i/458/submission/139100/507b39ff

Patatap

This is occupying my Friday...

The directions are a little vague. Use any key, A to Z and use Spacebar to change the catalogue(a new set of sounds).

That's better.

What is Krewella's Biggest Mistake?

Well if Krewella doesn't choose this shirt, that would definitely be a huge mistake! Look how drippy and melty it is! No one would be able to resist.

I could use your help if you'd be so inclined. This shirt is in a contest to get created and your support would mean so much to me. Just click HERE and hit "Support Mike". Here is a video to hold you off until this design becomes a shirt! Enjoy

Thanks!

What Does Day Dreaming Look Like?

I was put to the task to make a visualization of the sounds and words from the track "Eye Dozed On" by Cej, from his album Sleepwalker in Paradise. I posted the album cover a while ago which I also created for him.

Enjoy this time lapse of myself creating his mixed media art piece.

Colored on Photoshop CS5 after scanning in a hand drawn sketch.

(be sure to hit full screen and HD!)

Is Miley Cyrus' Wrecking Ball Music Video Making Young Kids Have Sex?

Of course it is! Thats rock 'n roll.... or pop 'n roll nowadays.

Anyway, The video was directed by Terry Richardson, and although I don't really like Richardson's attitude or his narcissism, I really liked the visuals of the music video.

Here is the video if you missed it.

This popped into my head when I watched it, and now it's available in my Society6 store.

El Camino Lamar

C'mon Kendrick!

Kendrick Lamar's 2012 Album "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City"

The Black Keys 2011 Album "El Camino"

I think it is safe to assume that if someone releases an album cover with a profile of a shitty van, you should wait a little longer than 10 months to do the same.

Gangnam Style Redo

Recently I wrote out the phonetic english lyrics to Gangnam Style. No, not the english translation but the words that it sounds like he is saying if he were to be singing in english, and it actually makes sensical lyrics.

Of course I had to use a little bit of made up slang, like using "tongue soup" to mean people kissing. The gist of the song is basically about a guy named Johnny and his friends who do a dance move called the "Nudge-Ya". The catchphrase of the chorus is still the same, with the idea that doing the "nudge-ya" is actually a part of being "Gangnam Style".

Enjoy.

Nudge-Ya
English lyrics by Mike Oncley
Produced by Park Jae-Sang, Yoo Gun Hyung

Nights in the dark shadow or eager, jogging, nudge-ya'.
Cocky, I'm Johnny, yo, you're Anne, I poke ya and I nudge-ya'.
Put me on your ship John its to Gowa, did I nudge-ya'?
Good and Bad, John, in a 'nudge-ya'!?
Now the summer air.
Not yet and all my cooked asada ruined, try summer air.
Call Keeshy, Keevo, Johnny, Walsh and Ted.
In the summer air, for me on your ship John, a cordial boat.
In the summer air, cooler summer air.
Drive a Daewoo, silence in our world. Couldn't know, everybody know.
Drive a Daewoo, silence in our world. Couldn't know, everybody know.
She can put Tom in the car she got, okay.
Oppah Gangnam Style.
Hey sexy lady.
Tongue soup "kapooey!".Gee man Norton doin' a 'nudge-ya'?
He dared her she'd put on her coat and Marty pulled a 'nudge-ya'.
Guy, yo! Gee Manuel, man, ambush! Elbo them, yeah hun, nudged-ya'!
Chewing gum, yuck! Choking. Nudge-ya!
Now the summer air.
Jump John, I'm boarding. He and Norton know the summer air.
They got in and walked on me troubling in summer air.
Girl that pulled a sassy little tumble tongue in summer air.
Cooler summer air.
Drive a Daewoo, silence in our world. Couldn't know, everybody know.
Drive a Daewoo, silence in our world. Couldn't know, everybody know.
She can put Tom in the car she got, okay.
Oppah Gangnam Style.
Hey sexy lady.
Tween or no?
Korean? I don't know.
Baby baby. Not anymore, jump, I don't know.
Tween or no?
Korean? I don't know.
Baby baby. Not no more a chump, I don't know.
You know what I say
Oppah Gangnam Style.
Hey sexy lady.

Macklemore Portrait - Make the Money

Here is the time lapse video for my latest art piece called "Make the Money" based off of the Macklemore lyric, "Make the money, don't let the money make you".

I just realized I forgot to add the 3rd progress video here. Well it's kind of pointless now but here it is anyway.

Bearzan

My "Bazonkers" drawing has progressed. After my lady told me David Bazan reminded her of a big cuddly teddy bear, I had to turn little David into a big bear looking for hugs.

I am also excited to say I am seeing Mr. David Bazan for the 2nd time on the 16th of this month. Me and the lady got tickets to one of his living room shows in Washington. For those who are unfamiliar with Bazan, he was the singer for The Headphones, and more popularly, for Pedro The Lion. Currently he is performing his godless solo project.
